How to use coffee grounds
“Nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed” this is what Lavoisier taught us almost at the end of the 1700s, and therefore today we want to talk to you about how to use coffee grounds instead of throwing them away.
After drinking a good cup of coffee, coffee grounds are normally disposed of in the organic waste bin. Today we are going to explain to you the many different ways in which they can be recycled: at home, in the garden or as a beauty remedy!
A excellent fertiliser
Coffee grounds are a fertiliser for plants and flowers: its use makes them more lush. When plants need repotting, add some coffee grounds to the universal potting soil. If you have a vegetable garden, you can distribute them directly into the soil.
To store them, you have to wait until they are perfectly dried out to avoid the development of mould.
Friends for your home
Put a bowl of dry coffee grounds in the refrigerator or freezer to prevent bad smells. Great when you run out of baking soda.
Whereas, if you wish to remove small scratches from wooden furniture, dip a Q-tip in the moistened grounds and dab the damaged part (it is recommended, of course, to try it on a hidden area first)
Beauty allies
If you mix coffee grounds with a bit of oil, you can prepare a mild body scrub to use under the shower for soft, velvety skin.
If you have brown hair, you can instead mix coffee with your hair conditioner. You will get a nourishing mask for your hair but also, with continuous application, you will revitalise your hair colour!
Sponge for pollutants
And finally, the last use is definitely the most innovative and comes from a research group at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa. Their studies have developed a sponge capable of filtering water and purifying it by absorbing pollutants. This sponge consists of 60% coffee grounds and 40% silicone.
In conclusion, the next time you make coffee, consider reusing their grounds before throwing them away, perhaps taking a cue from one of the idea we gave to you of how to use coffee grounds..
